Ian McMartin’s brewing career began at a somewhat unceremonious spot: a bathtub during college, where he made his first batches. But in the years since, the mastermind behind Whiprsnapr Brewing Company refined his craft, largely by traveling extensively around the world and experiencing some truly special beer and food along the way.

That experience was how Ian “earned his beer,” and he and his Whiprsnapr partners Dave Howard and Mike Feagan encourage patrons to earn theirs the same way—by being active, getting stuff done, and trying new things. That philosophy led the West Ottawa-based brewery to infuse its signature Root of Evil with a hint of smoke. Crafted from local grains and a touch of roasted corn, this lager harkens back to before Prohibition, when people would take a break and enjoy a beer before getting back to building their fourth skyscraper of the day. Whiprsnapr also brews beers with forest hikes in mind (the slightly pine-scented Inukshuk IPA), and beers that herald the sprung-ing of Spring (the Carol Anne Irish blonde ale, packed with vibrant honey and wheat malts).
